Het Kwade Oog zooms in on the harbour
On Tuesday 13 June, the fourth screening organised by the Het Kwade Oog film club will take place. Following a programme focusing on Charles Dekeukelaire, Emile Degelin and Harry Kümel, another significant film in the history of the Belgian film industry will be shown. ‘Meeuwen sterven in de haven’ (Seagulls Die in the Harbour) from 1955 is known as Roland Verhavert’s first film. In fact, it is a collaborative work on which Verhavert worked alongside Rik Kuypers, Ivo Michiels and others. The idea for the film originated with members of the then Antwerp film club Het Linnen Venster. Following the example of Italian neorealist films, they wanted to make a sketch film centred on Antwerp and the harbour. Ultimately, one of the sketches was developed into a feature film. Alongside ‘Meeuwen sterven in de haven’, Het Kwade Oog is also screening ‘Same Player’ by Stef Viane, an experimental animated film in which movement and travel served as the starting point for a colourful fantasy. The third film on the programme is a documentary about the port of Antwerp dating from 1925–1927. The film comes from the archives of the City of Antwerp and offers a surprising, little-known view of the harbour. The screening by Het Kwade Oog will take place on Tuesday 13 June at 8.00 pm in the auditorium of the Archive and Museum of Flemish Cultural Life, Minderbroederstraat 22, Antwerp (near the academy).
