Antwerp has a new film club, "Het Kwade Oog". On Tuesday, January 17, the club will start with - how could it be otherwise: "The Evil Eye", a film from 1937 by Charles Dekeukelaire. The supporting program will present several experimental short films by young Belgian filmmakers. The film evening takes place in the Archive and Museum for Flemish Cultural Life, Minderbroedersstraat 24, in Antwerp. Start time is 8:00 PM. "Het Kwade Oog" Dekeukelaire introduces the nameless inhabitants of Nederbrakel, Dikkelvenne and Etichove in a drama by Herman Teirlinck. A vagabond seeks out his childhood sweetheart but is met with misunderstanding from an entire village. Nameless film actors move in a Flemish landscape to music by Marcel Poot. A peasant film without the pejorative that came to be attached to it in the 1970s and one of the great feature films in Belgian film history.
The opening performance is exemplary of what Het Kwade Oog hopes to bring in the course of 1989. Unknown film treasures from the past and undeveloped talent that will be given projection space somewhere will be presented monthly (always on a Tuesday in the middle of the month) in the auditorium of the Archives. Het Kwade Oog wants to continue the line of the Antwerp Kineclub and Het Linnen Venster, which introduced the Antwerp public to a different form of film enjoyment in the interwar period and in the 1950s respectively. Het Kwade 0og will always turn its cinema evenings into an event, work around themes (animation, surrealism, shocking films) and invite young filmmakers. "Films that explore the medium, films that expand the film language, films that show different emotions, films that we want to see but we can't see anywhere," is the motto of Het Kwade Oog.
