Het Kwade Oog
On Tuesday, December 12 at 8 p.m., the Antwerp film club "Het Kwade Oog" will give a performance dedicated to the oeuvre of the French filmmaker Jean Vigo, who died young.
Soul is the key word in the work of Vigo, the son of an anarchist who was found hanged in prison in 1917. Vigo made only four films that had a major influence on later French cinema. In 1929 he shot the documentary "A propos de Nice", the settlement with the city where he lived. Followed two years later by another short documentary "Taris, roi de l'eau" about a French swimming champion. "Zéro de conduite" a fable about a boarding school and "L'Atlante" a skipper's parable are his only feature films. In Vigo's work, lyrical surrealism always goes hand in hand with harsh social criticism. Behind the poetic images there is always bitterness, nostalgia for happiness that Jean Vigo never knew.
